Paragon Studios' superpowered flagship MMO City of Heroes is surfing the ever-growing trendwave of paid online titles moving into the free-to-play market. The developer has announcedCity of Heroes Freedom, a free version of the seven-year-old game which will launch later this year. The MMO will follow an increasingly popular model, giving free players access to a partial list of areas and features available to paid subscribers -- however, in an unusual twist, free users will be able to pick and choose exactly which features and areas they want to access.

DC Universe Online Opens Marketplace. Going F2P?

Sony Online Entertainment has introduced the release of the microtransaction-based Marketplace in DC Universe Online.

The in-game Marketplace is actually quite small at the moment, however Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) will be incorporating far more content and products to the shop soon. Virtual goods are bought using Station Cash, but at this point the only real factor up on offer are Proto Repair-Bots and Vault Tickets, the second which gives gamers access to The Vault instance, where they’re able to earn unique rewards.

SOE is going to be adding more content to the DCUO Marketplace but at this time around, they’re keeping fairly silent about what types of things they’ll be adding. SOE does have a number of online games that are currently free-to-play like Magic: The Gathering Tactics, Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars and Adventures and more which leads us to believe that DC Universe Online might very well be delivered as a free-to-play game in the future.
